Ayurveda Treatments For Lower Back Pain

Low back ache is something most people might have experienced atleast once in their life time and is one of the most common reasons for which people consult doctors. LBA is usually associated with:

  • Musculoskeletal causes
  • Genito-urinary causes
  • Ano-rectal causes

LBA is not gender specific; men and women are equally affected and occurs most often between the ages 30-50 years. It may be as a result of ageing process and degeneration, sedentary life style, lack of exercise, secondary to ano-rectal diseases like Piles/hemorrhoids, fistula, etc. and genito-urinary conditions like UTI, uterine fibroids, PID, etc. Common symptoms of back pain include muscle ache, shooting or stabbing pain, radiating pain to the legs, restricted range of movements and in severe untreated cases patient may also become bed ridden.

In ayurveda, back pain is commonly referred to as ‘Kateegraham’ or ‘Kateeshoolam’. Wherever there is pain (shoola), the main dosha involved is Vata . The reason for aggrevation of Vata may vary in different cases. But ultimately, the vitiated Vata dries up the moisture content/ joint fluids resulting in rigidity, restricted movement, increased friction and the inflammation and stiffness of paravertebral muscles.

At Sanjeevanam, an integrated approach is taken for treating LBA which includes Ayurveda therapies, oral medications, Yoga practices, functional fitness, physiotherapy, posture correction and diet-life style management. Ayurveda therapies include :

  • Snehapana (oral administration of graded dose of medicated ghee)
  • Virechana (medically induced purgation)
  • Snehavasthi (administration of medicated oil through anal opening/ medicated oil enema)
  • A range of Niroohavasthis (enema using decoctions/ ionic mixture) viz Kashayavasthi, Vaitharanavasthi etc.
  • Bahya sneha sweda procedures like Choorna Pinda Sweda/ Podi kizhi (rubbing/ pounding body using bundles of medicated powder with or without dipping in oil)
  • Kayaseka/ Pizhichil (rhythmic pouring of medicated oil all over the body)
  • Patra Pinda Sweda/ Ilakizhi (rubbing/ pounding with bundles of herbal leaves and other drugs)
  • Shashtika shali Pinda Sweda/ Njavarakizhi (rubbing or pounding with bundles of a special rice or Njavara cooked in decoction & milk after dipping in the same medicated milk decoction or medicated oils)

The ayurvedic treatments are done according to the condition of the patient & ailment and are aimed to nourish the bones and joints, reduce inflammation, tone up muscles and treat any other underlying pathology.
